Is Germany Becoming a Go-To Destination For Indian Students?

Germany has become a go-to destination for Indian students, drawn by affordable tuition, a manageable cost of living, and abundant scholarship options. For the second year running, Indian students form the largest group of international enrollees, with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) reporting a 15.1% rise in numbers over the past year. In the Winter Semester of 2023-2024 alone, Germany welcomed 49,483 students from India.

According to DAAD, the growth has been significant: "Indian student numbers in Germany continue to rise, having more than doubled in the last five years. Indian students are now the largest international group in Germany for a second consecutive year."

What Indian Students Are Studying in Germany

Engineering is the top choice, making up 60% of Indian enrolments, with Law, Management, and Social Studies at 21%, and Mathematics and Natural Sciences at 13%. Only 5% of students opt for other fields, showcasing a strong focus on technical disciplines. As for types of institutions, 56% of students attend traditional universities, while 44% choose universities of applied sciences, which emphasize practical skills.

Germany offers accessible tuition fees, numerous scholarships, and a reasonable cost of living. Its globally recognized universities, especially in STEM, feature diverse English-taught programs, making it an ideal fit for international students. Students in Germany can work up to 20 hours weekly and enjoy an 18-month post-study work permit. With a straightforward visa process and an emphasis on research and hands-on experience, Germany creates a welcoming environment for students worldwide.
